We have announced the 3CX Debian Appliance a while ago, the product entered into its final stage and is GA now. We have also detailed the steps for creating an USB key with the Installer for MiniPC. In this post, we’ll show the steps required to deploy and configure the product. Update 5 of 3CX for Linux is a stripped down version of Debian Linux which runs a PBX software. It has complete feature parity with the Windows version.
3cx Firmware Download
A Debian-based Linux distribution with 3CX software is designed to run a complete unified communications platform. There is a 3CX client included in the distribution but you can also install it separately. The 3CX PBX provides a complete open standards-based IP PBX and phone system that works with popular SIP trunks and IP phones. It will automatically configure all supported peripherals and it also comes with clients for Windows, OS X, iOS, and Android.
The ISO image includes a free license for the 3CX PBX edition. Note that the Free version has 8 simultaneous calls and works for 25 users. The Debian for 3CX ISO image runs the standard Debian installer which installs a minimal system with the nginx web server, PostgreSQL database, iptables firewall and Secure Shell. Options not relevant to 3CX have been removed from the distribution.
Step 1:Download the ISO from here > Create new VM based on Debian > Attach the ISO to the VM (check the connect on boot) > Boot the VM > Assign hostname > Partition > Let the installer run. Note that the installation needs internet access as the installer updates the installation straight away with the latest sources from Debian repos as well.
Step 2: Connect via web browser from another machine via the IP you see through the console (or vSphere web client) and follow the installation instructions (Detailed Step-by-Step is here).
To run it, enter the IP followed by port 5015 (eg. http://10.10.7.156:5015) in a browser on another machine.
Step 3: Install the client software on your laptop/desktop. Double-click on the configuration file attached to your 3CX Welcome Email or drag and drop the configuration file in the 3CX Client. Installing 3CX on Debian Linux
On this topic
3CX created a Debian Linux ISO(get ISO here) to make installation faster and management easier. Most of the OS management can be done from within the 3CX Management Console.
Important: We strongly recommend that you dedicate your Debian Linux instance to 3CX.Do not install other packages or change its configuration, as this prevents us from upgrading your operating system to a new version and providing support for your install.
Υour machine or VM needs at least one (1) CPU core and one (1) GB of RAM. Review the suggested hardware specifications to allocate additional CPU time and RAM resources based on:
- Number of simultaneous calls the system handles.
- Number of active users - 100 Web Client active sessions is more demanding than 100 occasional calls via IP phones.
- Call recording use - stresses the system for audio mixing and file storage.
Supported VM Platforms
3CX is tested and supported to run as a Virtual Machine on these hypervisor platforms:
- VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) 6.X and above.
- Microsoft HyperV 2008 R2 and above - see our Hyper-V Page for required settings.
- KVM
- Citrix XenServer 7.0 and above.
Avoid using 3CX on converted VMs (P2V) due to possible timing issues, causing the guest OS not to sync with the hypervisor’s timer.
Supported Mini PCs
3CX Phone System has been tested on the following MiniPC models:
Network, Firewall & Other Requirements
- LAN installs are supported on properly configured RFC 1918 private networks, i.e. 172.16.0.0 /10.0.0.0/192.168.0.0 range IP range.
- The PBX needs to be configured with a dedicated public IP.
- Installing 3CX on a machine behind a NAT device, requires port forwarding. See the Firewall & Router Configuration Guide.
- Do not configure the 3CX host machine with a virtual network or VPN interface.
- Disable any unused network interface(s), Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter(s).
- Use the latest version of Firefox, Google Chrome or Edge to access the 3CX Management Console.
- The 3CX host machine needs internet connectivity to and downloads.3cx.com/*on port 443 (HTTPS) for activation, updates and other info.
- To send emails via 3CX SMTP the machine needs to allow outbound TCP:2528.
- See also Ports Used by 3CX Phone Systemfor the list of required ports that need to be available, i.e. not used by any other service.
To install Debian for 3CX:
- Download the Debian for 3CX ISO.
- If you are using a hypervisor/virtualized OS set the CD option to boot from the ISO and ensure the CD drive is set to connect on startup. If you are installing on a mini PC, then create a bootable image, plug it into one of the available Mini PC’s USB ports, set the BIOS to boot from the USB drive to start the installation.
- Boot your system with the downloaded 3CX ISO, select “Install”from the main boot screen and press the <Enter> key.
- Important: You need to configure a static IP addressfor the 3CX host machine. Select <Go Back> or press the ‘ESC’ key when asked for the hostname to first set the IP address of the system and then configure the hostname. The system’s IP address affects the running PBX services, connected clients and IP phones. To change the IP address on a running 3CX system, you need to reboot the machine and then re-provision the connected apps and IP phones. If you don’t want to set a static IP address, proceed to Step 6.
- Select “Configure Network Manually”and press the <Enter> key to set the system's static IP address. Select <Continue> to enter the network netmask and select <Continue>. Then, enter the network default gateway IP address and select <Continue>. Finally, enter the name server(s) IP address(es) and select <Continue>.
- Enter a hostname for the computer so you can easily identify it on your network, using the characters 'a' to 'z', numbers '0' to '9' and the '-' character.
- Enter a domain name - use the same domain you used on other computers in the network, e.g. . Select <Continue> to proceed.
- Select the default system language and press the <Enter> key.
- Select your geographical location from the location menu and press the <Enter> key to proceed.
- Specify the rootaccount password for the machine and select <Continue> to re-enter the password for verification purposes. Finally, select <Continue> to proceed.
Note:Set a strong password for the
user, as this account has no restrictions!- Select the system timezone and press the <Enter> key to proceed.
- Partition your disk, selecting“Guided - use entire disk”.Press the <Enter> key to proceed.
- Confirm your disk selection by pressing the <Enter> key.
Note:If you are installing on a bare metal machine, all data on your disk will be erased!
- Select the “All files in one partition” partitioning scheme and press the <Enter> key to proceed.
- Select “Finish partitioning and write changes to disk” and press the <Enter> key to proceed to the3CX Debian installation.
- Select ‘Yes’and press the <Enter> key to confirm writing changes to the disk. The install process can take about 5-20 minutes, depending on your machine’sperformance. When the Debian installer finishes, the machine is rebooted and the 3CX installationstarts automatically.
- Choose the 3CX package to install on the “3CX Update Channel” screen:
- “3CX Stable” - PBX stable edition .
- “3CX Beta” - PBX evaluation edition of the PBX.
- “3CX SBC” - Session Border Controller, followthis guide to configure the SBC.
Select <OK> to agree to the 3CX License Agreement on the “Configuring unattended-upgrades” screen.
- After the 3CX install finishes and the machine is rebooted, run the 3CX configuration wizard via:
- (1) a web browser to open http://<ip of machine>:5015.
- (2) the command line.
