Initially, even I didn't get the hype about the show. So much was being talked about it and the cult icon status that it had attained but I could never get myself to watch even one episode. However, sometime in July '15, after I saw some off-screen interviews of the cast which looked fun, I started watching the series on YouTube (yes, full episodes up for those who want to catch it, and please do! It started in July '14) and trust me, I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. I was addicted to the show, to each episode. It seemed to grow on me slowly. Here are my reasons to continue watching the series until the end (it ended on December 31st 2015 after a year and a half run):
Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan Season 1 Episode 211
- Brilliant acting - The leads (Manik & Nandini, a.k.a. MaNan) gave some stupendous performances in realising the love story of two simple teenagers. They went on to become youth icons even. They complimented each other really well and the support cast adequately carried their story forward. The leads had, what they say 'sizzling chemistry' and their storyline deviated from the traditional Indian soap romances, indulging in some bold scenes, addressing some taboo issues (see further points), and more.
- Unique Storyline - Until Season 1, the storyline was crisp and fresh. They didn't drag one plot for too long, dealt with social issues pretty well ranging from irrevocably tight friendships (Fab 5) to dressing sense, jealousy, mental/physical disorders, teenage pregnancy, and gay rights. Everything was covered adequately and a musical back drop was an added bonus for success.
- Relatable characters & language usage - This was the biggest plus point for me to go forward with the series. I could relate to the leads and trust me, the series was full of them. Their love story took a gradual turn for the better, the problems they faced together was genuinely written and portrayed and the events leading upto their love story were very realistic. The writers and directors of the show did not shy away from showcasing bold content which today's youth FEEL and go through during adolescence. They weren't seen as a taboo and were addressed in a very balanced manner (not going overboard with the scenes either). The dialogues also clicked with the Indian youth - balancing out Hindi with English (the latest craze doing rounds) - and reached a wider audience.
- Impeccable creative vision - The show was an experiment carried out by MTV, which they claim ever so often, and was promoted minimally. Yet, it was developed so lucidly and genuinely that when you watch it, you tend to understand what each character is going through - it doesn't sugar coat them much. The vision of the Creative Head, Ms. Richa Yamini, was simple and class apart. It was amazingly executed by the supporting cast and crew.
- Music background - The show revolved around music (rock and Indian alike), music competitions and had some great background score too. Music has always connected to the Indian audience in a profound manner. The visionaries were intelligent enough to concoct a brilliant formula by marrying the two - it was surely going to work.
Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan Season 1 Episode 211 Oldvidz
Overall, season 1 of the show was a dream. Its successor (season 2) was a nightmare. Plagued with poor storyline, frequent creative changes, poor content writers, mini exit stint of the male lead and innumerable off-screen dramas contributed to the slow deterioration of the show (Season 2) so much so that it was dethroned from it's no. 1 spot heartlessly (fans mocking the entire cast, indulging in fan wars, demanding comebacks and storyline changes). This show was a classic example of devising the perfect formula to ruin a no.1 sitcom - by the time it ended, the fan base was HAPPY that it did (as opposed to the sorrow and void fans normally feel after a show ends) - so did I (btw).
I rest my case here. Happy watching KY2, Season 1.
