In a surprise announcement at the company's press event in Santa Monica, California, for its forthcoming PlayStation 2 title, Twisted Metal: Black, Sony Computer Entertainment America revealed that it plans to bring a fifth Twisted Metal game to the original PlayStation console. The game, which has yet to be named, will not, however, be a slimmed down version of the dark and gruesome Twisted Metal: Black. Instead, it will be a completely new Twisted Metal game geared towards a younger audience.

The game will have the same basic gameplay that was presented in the first two incarnations of Twisted Metal on PlayStation with a few new enhancements and a kids theme. Instead of shooting missiles, machine guns and bombs, the vehicles in this new PlayStation Twisted Metal will weapons like Nerf rockets, spit wads, bottle rockets and others kid-oriented things.

And as an alternative to big gruesome vehicles of destruction, there will be R/C cars that are being controlled by younger versions of many of the infamous characters from the Twisted Metal universe. Based on the design sketches that were passed around the room, it appears that there will be in the area of 20 different characters that all have a very cartoonish look to them.

The levels will be large, full-scale environments that have themes similar to what you're used to in Twisted Metal, but with a much younger slant to them. They'll be multi-faceted, much like in Twisted Metal: Black, and will range from suburban areas to wide-open deathmatch-type arenas.

Developed by Incognito Studios South, the new Twisted Metal on PlayStation is currently scheduled for release in fall 2001 and promises to offer a gaming experience that while aimed at a younger audience is enjoyable by gamers of all ages. And according to Dave Jaffe, the director and lead designer for Twisted Metal: Black for PS2 and Twisted Metal 1 & 2 for PlayStation, 'the game won't be a piece of shit.' And if his track record means anything, it won't.
