Chapter 57
Rhaegal did not like the cold.
When he wasn't flying, he was curled up in the godswood. A dragon in Winterfell's godswood, thought Selene in wonder. The last dragons in the north were Queen Alysanne's Silverwing and King Jaeharys' Vermithor. Selene shivered, and not from the cold. My ancestors. Selene learned about them in her lessons, but her father always made sure that she saw them as Targaryens first, instead of what they really were. My family.
And here Rhaegal sat, snow covering him like a blanket. The first dragon in Westeros in centuries. And he's my mount, she thought, immense pride swelling in her chest. Selene stroked his snout, and Rhaegal gave a metallic purr.
Selene felt someone approach and thought it was Jon. She felt a stab of playfulness. 'Do you want to ride him?'
'More than you know.'
Selene turned to find Petyr Baelish.
Littlefinger always had dark hair with threads of grey running through it, but now half of it was silver. He had the same small pointed beard on his chin and the same laughing grey-green eyes and mocking smile. He seemed shorter, somehow. No, I've grown taller. I'm not the same little girl he knew in King's Landing, and he's no longer my father's master of coin who smiles as if the world is a joke that he alone understands. He is my enemy.
'Lord Baelish.'
'Princess Selene,' he gave her a deep bow, 'Forgive me, it is princess, is it not? It's hard to keep up. First it was princess, then it was queen…or was it traitor?'
'Depends on whose side you were on, I suppose.'
'Well said.' His eyes flicked back to Rhaegal, and Selene saw lust there. All this man wants is power, and I have the ultimate power behind me. Rhaegal sensed the danger and shook off the snow, looking at Baelish with wary, bronze eyes.
Littlefinger took a half-step forward. 'When I heard you had escaped King's Landing, I thought it was the end of you. The end of Robert Baratheon's line. Of the irritatingly self-righteous princess who expected loyalty from everyone, simply because of who her father was.'
He's trying to get a rise out of me. I'll die before I let that happen. Selene kept her face expressionless, but Rhaegal could feel the storm brewing in her and bared his fangs.
Littlefinger raised his brows in surprise, 'You've finally learned to control that temper of yours. Good. It will serve you well. Trust me, I've been doing it for years and I've made it this far.'
Selene had to bite back a laugh. Only a fool would trust him. 'You've always been rather impressed with yourself, haven't you?'
Baelish smiled, 'The past is the past. The future is all that's worth discussing. The future of House Baratheon.'
'Don't pretend to have any concern for my house or me,' Selene snapped, 'I should have known I would see you again as soon as things started going well.'
'I promise you-'
'I promise you, Lord Baelish, if anything happens to the people I care about, I will have nothing to hide,' she gave him a knowing look, sure he would understand. I will tell Catelyn what you did to Ned, and then your life is over.
He gave her a calculated look, so Selene thought it necessary to add, 'And if I should meet with some accident here in Winterfell, they'll never even find what's left of you.'
Rhaegal huffed.
'So, why have you sought me out?'
'Because you are missing an opportunity.'
'And what might that be?'
'To be Queen Selene, First of Her Name, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm.'
Selene laughed, 'The time for that has long passed.'
'Has it?' Littlefinger's eyes flashed, 'You have forgotten yourself, Selene. Your father was a king. Your mother a queen. You were born and raised to rule. You had the loyalty of several kingdoms, armies, and-'
'I lost.'
'You fell off the board,' Petyr corrected her, 'But you have climbed back on.'
It's all just a game of cyvasse to him.
'Think of it, Selene,' Littlefinger continued, 'You sit the Iron Throne, as your father wished, your wolf by your side…'
Selene froze.
Littlefinger smiled, 'I'm sure you thought you were being discreet, but you forget, I am the proud proprietor of King's Landing's finest brothels. I know what desire looks like, and it won't take long for others to see what I do. I wonder what the honorable Catelyn Stark will do once she sees her beloved son's widow in bed with her husband's bastard.'
Selene kept her voice as even as possible, 'I have no idea what you're talking about.'
Littlefinger smirked, 'I'm sure you don't. But that bastard is now King in the North, and a worthy consort to a queen, if a queen will have him.' As he spoke, he got closer, until he was right before her.
'Daenerys Targaryen will make a good queen,' Selene said softly, 'I am her heir. Why would I risk that?'
'Because you want the crown. You've always tried to fight your true nature, but you are every bit as ambitious as the grandfather you murdered. And now you have the ultimate weapon,' he glanced at Rhaegal.
'Daenerys has three dragons.'
'She did. Now she has two.'
Selene was curious, 'And where do you see yourself in all of this?'
Littlefinger smiled, 'Warden of the East, Warden of the North…Hand of the Queen.'
'He wants me,' Sansa had said. Selene didn't realize how much, and bile rose in her throat. He claims to love Catelyn, but now that's she's aged he's moved on to Sansa. 'Why would I trust you?'
'Because we can help each other get what we want.'
'And what do I want?'
'The throne of your father. The crown he wore. Jon Snow.'
'You're wrong.' Selene said, but her mouth felt dry. He is wrong…isn't he? She went to leave, but he called after her.
'If you change your mind you know where to find me, Your Grace.'
###
Selene walked into the Great Hall and sat in the nearest chair. The lords were discussing the future, and Jon was speaking.
'I want every northern maester to scour their records for any mention of dragonglass. Dragonglass kills White Walkers, and is now more valuable to us than gold. We need to find it, we need to mine it, we need to make weapons from it. Everyone aged ten to sixty will drill daily with spears, pikes, bow and arrow…'
Lord Cerywn spoke, 'It's about time we taught these boys of summer how to fight.' The men laughed.
'Not just the boys,' said Jon, 'We can't defend the north if only half the population is fighting.'
Lord Glover stood, 'You expect me to put a spear in my grandaughter's hand?'
Little Lyanna Mormont stood, 'I don't plan on knitting by the fire while men fight for me. I might be small, Lord Glover, and I might be a girl, but I am every bit as much a northerner as you.'
'Indeed you are my lady, no one is questioning-'
Maege spoke, 'We don't need your permission to defend the north.' Her eyes found Selene, 'No man here should need reminding of the strength of women, but if they do, I welcome them to speak with myself or Lady Selene.' The lords began to laugh. Maege turned to Jon, 'We will begin training every man, woman, boy, and girl on Bear Island.'
Jon nodded, 'While we're preparing our attack, we need to strengthen our defenses. The only thing standing between us and the army of the dead is the Wall, and the Wall hasn't been properly manned in centuries.' His eyes fell to the back of the room, 'I am not the king of the Free Folk, but if we're going to survive this winter together-'
A big beast of a man with wild red hair stood, his icy blue eyes fixed on Jon, 'You want us to man the castles for you.'
'Aye,' Jon agreed, ignoring the murmuring from the northern lords, 'The last time we saw the Night King was at Hardhome. The closest castle is Eastwatch-By-The-Sea.'
'Then that's where I'll go.' said Tormund. He boomed with laughter, 'Looks like we're the Night's Watch now.' He sat, shooting Selene a quick wink. She barely suppressed a giggle. Tormund was everything Jon said he would be and more.
'If they breach the Wall, they will have to pass the Last Hearth-'
An old man with a ruddy face and a shaggy white beard stood. He wore a chunk of dragonglass in place of a lost eye and a cloak made of a snow bear with its head as a hood. 'They will have to pass us Umbers first.'
Is this Mors Umber, the Greatjon's uncle? Selene had witnessed Smalljon's death at the Twins and had assumed the Greatjon was dead as well, but had not thought about who ruled the Last Hearth.
Jon nodded, 'And they will have to pass Karhold.'
Lord Royce stood, 'The Karstarks betrayed the north. Their castle should be torn down with not a stone left standing.'
'The castle committed no crimes,' said Sansa, 'and we need every fortress we have for the war to come. We should give Karhold to a new family, a loyal family who supported us against Ramsay.'
Men chorused their agreement.
Jon looked down, 'The Karstarks have fought beside the Starks for centuries. They've kept faith from generation to generation-'
'And then they broke faith,' said Sansa.
'I'm not going to strip this family of their ancestral home because of the crimes of a few reckless sons.'
'So there's no punishment for treason and no reward for loyalty.'
The hall fell quiet, a strange tension in the air. Catelyn looked warily between Sansa and Jon, daring him to contradict her. The lords looked to each other, as if wondering who was right, the King in the North or the Lady of Winterfell.
Jon turned to his sister, 'The punishment for treason is death. Harrion Karstark died on the field of battle.'
'He died fighting for Ramsay. Give the castle to a family of a man who died for you.'
Jon addressed the room, 'When I was Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, I executed men who betrayed me. I executed men who refused to follow orders. My father always said that the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword and I have tried to live by those words…but I will not punish a daughter for her father's sins. And I will not take a family home from a family it has belonged to for centuries. That is my decision, and my decision is final.'
Sansa bit her lip in frustration, but turned in her seat and held her tongue all the same.
'Alys Karstark.' Jon gestured for a young girl of twelve to come forward. A tall, skinny, coltish girl, Alys had weaved her brown hair into a braid for the occasion. She had a pale, long face, a pointy chin, blue-grey eyes and small ears.
'For centuries our families fought side by side on the battlefield. I ask you to pledge your loyalty once again to House Stark, to serve as our bannerman, and to come to our aid whenever called upon.'
Alys drew a small sword and knelt before it.
'Stand,' when she did, Jon said, 'Yesterday's wars don't matter anymore. The north needs to band together, all the living north. Will you stand beside me Alys, now and always?'
'Now and always.' Her voice was nervous, but strong. The men began to cheer, and Jon gave her a warm smile. Tears of gratitiufe rose to the girl's eyes. She almost had her family home ripped from under her because of her father and brother, and now she is the Lady of Karhold. And all because of Jon.
Sansa looked away.
Jon and Sansa left the room together, most of the men and women followed suit, but Selene walked up to the biggest woman in the room.
'Lady Brienne.'
The years had changed everyone, and Brienne of Tarth was no exception. She looked more comfortable in her own skin, and her hair was tidier. Her big blues eyes were warm, and when Selene spoke, Brienne fell to her knees.
'My lady, I am glad to see you alive and well.'
'Rise, Lady Brienne.' When she did, Selene smiled, 'I am so pleased to see you.'
Brienne flushed with shame, 'I should have been there with you at the Twins. I should have never left you.'
Selene could see how much the woman was torturing herself, 'You didn't leave me. I commanded you to serve Lady Catelyn. You did all that I asked and more. I hear Lady Sansa owes you her life.'
Brienne straightened, 'I swore to Lady Catelyn I would protect her daughter.'
'And you have entered Sansa's service.'
'I swore her my sword…I thought you were dead.' Brienne tried to explain. Selene stepped forward, taking the girl's large hands. Selene had to look up to meet Brienne's eyes.
'I understand, my lady. I was honored to have you in my service, however briefly. I'm sure Lady Sansa feels very much the same.'
Lady Brienne looked torn, 'I can't serve two ladies.'
Selene smiled, plainly seeing what Brienne was asking, what this honorable knight needed to hear, 'I know,' Selene straigtened, 'I, Selene of House Baratheon, release you from my service, Brienne of Tarth.'
Brienne sighed, as if a great weight lifted from her shoulders. 'It was an honor to serve you, Lady Selene.'
'The honor was mine.' Selene went to leave, but Brienne stopped her.
'You should know, my lady, that it was I who avenged Lord Renly's death. Now his shade can rest.'
Selene frowned, 'How?'
Brienne didn't skip a beat, 'In his name and yours, I executed Lord Stannis.'
A chill went up Selene's spine. True to the last, this one. But as much pain as Stannis had caused her, he was still her uncle. What do I say? Thank you?
'You did your duty.' With that, Selene left in search of Jon and Sansa.
She found the maester first. He had a letter in his hands. 'Are you looking for Jon?' she asked.
The maester straightened, 'Yes, for His Grace.'
His Grace. It was almost enough to make her laugh. King Jon? Oh, how the wheel the fortune spins. 'I'll bring it to him.'
Selene found them in the crypts, deep in conversation. No doubt about her challenging his authority in the Great Hall, Selene knew. Her footsteps echoed in the chilly air.
Robb had once told her the cavernous vault was larger than Winterfell itself, with older Starks buried in deeper and darker levels. This is where the Starks come when the warmth seeps out of their bodies, this dark hall of the dead. Selene cast a glance at the stone kings and lords who stared her down, and she felt like she was intruding. Their faces were stern and strong, and Selene wished she knew all their tales. Robb should be here with his family. Selene blinked back tears.
When she approached, they turned to face her.
'A raven from King's Landing.'
Jon unfurled the note. As he read it, Selene faced the statue of Lyanna Stark, her heart lurching. I thought Rhaegar had raped you, but he loved you, didn't he? And my father…he started a war to get you back, and you died anyway. How many lives would have been spared if you had loved my father?
Jon read the letter once, and then twice. He closed his eyes, sighed, and continued to walk down the corridor. Selene and Sansa exchanged a look before following.
'Cersei of House Lannister, First of Her Name-'
'What?' Selene had to stop him there. 'She…she's declared herself queen?'
Jon nodded. Sansa didn't look shocked, but Selene's stomach had dropped. What did I expect? Joffrey and Tommen are gone, she sees me as a traitor…but there's still Myrcella. Wouldn't Cersei crown Myrcella? A dark voice whispered in the back of her mind. Not if Myrcella is gone, too.
Selene steadied herself. No, Myrcella is not gone. She…she must just be in Dornish hands. The Martells aren't handing her over, that must be it.
'What does she want?'
Jon looked over the north, 'Come to King's Landing. Bend the knee or suffer the fate of all traitors.'
Sansa looked away, 'You've been so consumed with the enemy to the north, you've forgotten the enemy to the south.'
'I've been consumed with the Night King because I've seen him. And believe me, you would think of little else if you had, too.'
'We still have a wall between us and the Night King,' Sansa argued, 'There's nothing between us and Cersei.'
'There's a thousand miles between Winterfell and King's Landing,' Jon said, 'Winter is here. The Lannisters are a southern army, they've never ranged this far north.'
'You have a mind for strategy, Jon,' Selene conceded, trying to focus on anything other than her sister's fate, 'but I know my mother. If you're her enemy, she will never stop until she's destroyed you.'
Sansa nodded, 'Everyone who's ever crossed her, she's found a way to murder.'
Jon held his sister's gaze, 'You almost sound as if you admire her.'
Sansa looked away, 'I learned a great deal from her.'
'There is another way.'
Jon and Sansa turned to Selene.
'Daenerys Targaryen should be landing on Dragonstone any day now. She wants the Iron Throne, which my mother just happens to be sitting on. If she were to prevail…'
'We just gained our independence,' said Sansa, 'The north doesn't want to bow to a new queen.'
'Sansa, I'm sure you're familiar with the Wars of Conquest.'

The girl straightened, 'Of course I am.'
'The north didn't want to bow then, either. But Torrhen Stark knelt, because the lives of his people were more important than his pride.'
Sansa's eyes narrowed, 'What are you suggesting?'
'I'm suggesting that perhaps you should content yourselves with Lords of Winterfell and Wardens of the North.' Selene didn't understand Sansa's hesitation. 'There's no need for bloodshed.'

'The northern lords have just made Jon their king!'
'They have,' Selene thought about something Robb told her years ago, 'And they can unmake him just as easily. Do you know why I came here?'
'To save us,' said Sansa, though her voice sounded uncertain.
'Yes. From the Boltons and, gods forbid, from Daenerys. The north is too weak to withstand an invasion from her armies and dragons. You must bend the knee.'
Jon shook his head, 'We don't even know her.'
An idea struck her, 'Come with me to Dragonstone.'
Sansa turned her head sharply, 'What?'
'It's the only way for you to see her as I do.'
'It's too great a risk,' said Sansa.
Selene turned to Jon, 'Didn't you tell me that fire kills wights?'
'Yes.'
'Well, what breathes fire?'
Jon looked away.
'If the army of the dead makes it passed the Wall,' Selene reasoned, 'do you have enough men to fight them?'
Jon didn't answer. He will bend the knee to save his people. He has to.
Selene stepped closer to him, 'It's the only way to save the north,' she said softly, 'You know it is.'
Jon met her gaze, and Selene felt like something in her chest was melting.
Sansa looked from Jon to Selene and back again. Littlefinger was right. Others will start seeing it, too. Selene took a step back.
Sansa straightened, 'I need to clear my head. If you two will excuse me.'
Once they were alone, Jon shifted uncomfortably. Selene more than understood. There is too much to say, and most of it unpleasant. It's much easier to brush it to the side. To think of it as a problem for another day.
Selene had an idea. She grabbed Jon's hand, 'Come with me.' She turned and ran.
'Wha-' Jon struggled to keep up, 'Where are we going?'
'Trust me, will you?'
Jon laughed, a sound she could listen to forever. It echoed off the stone walls, and Selene wondered when the last time laughter was heard in this place.
She pulled him into the white light of day, and they hurried toward the godswood. Selene looked up at the sky. Where are- she stopped short when she heard him screech.
'Rhaegal!'
He turned sharply at her voice, diving down. He beat his wings once before he landed to slow his fall, and the earth shook with his weight, snow sliding off the nearby trees.
His emerald spinal plates shook as the dragon approached them, his claws digging into the earth with every step. When he was before them, he swiveled his head to Selene, sniffing her. She let go of Jon's hand to stoke his scaly snout, and he purred. 'Did you have a nice fly?'
Jon was looking at her as if she were mad.
'What's wrong?' Selene said sweetly, 'Never seen a dragon before?'
'Come to think of it, yes, I have,' Jon countered, 'I've seen one in battle.'
'And?'
Jon paused for a moment, choosing his words carefully, 'I've never seen anything so beautiful and terrifying, all at once.'
'You're still speaking of the dragon, right?'

Jon laughed, his eyes settling on her for a moment too long.
Selene felt a blush across her cheeks, but avoided Jon's gaze. If he keeps looking at me like that…Selene mounted Rhaegal.
She hadn't ridden the dragon since the battle. I've missed this, and I want to share it with him.
Selene tilted her head to the side, 'Go on, then. Show him some love. He won't bite.' She turned to Rhaegal, 'No biting. See?'
Rhaegal gave a small roar in response, but Jon stood his ground. Rhaegal brought his face close to Jon, and sniffed. Selene leaned forward, watching, but it was difficult to see with Rheagal's neck in the way. Please don't eat the nice man, Rhaegal.
Jon slipped off his glove, and extended a shaking hand toward Rhaegal's snout. The dragon kept his teeth bared, but didn't move away. Taking that as encouragement, Jon placed a hand delicately on Rhaegal's snout. The dragon made high-pitched, happy noises.
Selene looked on in astonishment. She knew Rhaegal wouldn't hurt Jon, not with her there, but she didn't expect Rhaegal to like him. The dragon looked back at Selene, his pupils as dilated as they were when he smelled her for the first time back in Meereen. Curiouser and curiouser.
Selene shook her head. Anyway.. 'Come on, then.'
Jon looked from her, to Rhaegal, to back again, 'I don't know how to ride a dragon!'
'Do you think I did? Come on, Your Grace,' she teased.
'Alright, alright! Just don't call me that.'
'Of course..Your Majesty.'
Jon grunted as he scrabbled for purchase on Rhaegal's scales, 'Selene!'
'Your Radiance!' Jon was a little closer, 'Your Excellency!', he threw his leg over, sitting right behind her, 'Your Supreme-'
Jon slid his hand behind her neck and kissed her long and deep. When he pulled away, Selene was left gaping like fish, '-Highness,' she finished, her voice hoarse. She cleared her throat. 'Did you just do that to shut me up?'
'Yes, I did. Don't make me do it again,' he said sternly, though Selene could see a flush creeping up his neck. 'Honestly, Selene. With you, I'm just Jon, alright?'
'Jon,' Selene repeated, 'I'll try to remember that, though you may have to remind me a few more times. Just to be sure.'
Jon laughed, but then he looked around, lost, 'What do I hold on to?'
Me, she wanted to say, but didn't. She pointed, 'I'll be holding these plates, so you should hold these,' she wrapped his hands on the spikes just below where she would be grabbing, 'and squeeze your legs around him. It's just like riding a horse.'
'A horse, right,' Jon looked nervous.
Selene couldn't hide her excitement, 'Are you ready?'
'As ready as I'll ever be.'
Selene leaned forward, gripping Rhaegal's bronze plates with firm hands. The dragon twisted under her, his muscles rippling as he leaned back, his green wings cracking like thunder.

Jon yelled obscenities in her ear, but Selene could hardly hear him. Her heart was bursting. There's no greater joy than flying. Rhaegal turned sharply, and Jon shouted, nearly losing his grip as they soared north.
Selene whooped as Rhaegal dove toward the trees. The treetops just kissed his belly as they flew. Selene was laughing, the cold wind whipping at her eyes. Suddenly, the ground was gone, and Rhaegal was above a sheer cliff. Out of instinct, he dove.
Rhaegal roared, Selene hooted, and Jon yelped, though Selene could hardly hear anything over the screaming of the wind. At the last moment, Rhaegal straightened, narrowly avoiding the canyon floor, and soared between the tall, white cliffs. Rhaegal began to beat his wings higher, out of the canyon. Then something strange happened.
One moment, Jon was looking at something below, the next, his foot dug into Rhaegal's side. The dragon obeyed, turning sharply toward whatever Jon wanted to see.
Selene gave him a quizzical look as Rhaegal descended. The dragon landed on the ice with a thunder that shook the ground. Jon slid off, wearing a large grin as he regained his balance. 'That was….that was…!'
'It's indescribable, isn't it?'
Jon howled with laughter, 'It really is! It's….it's absolute freedom.' He gave her a mock-reproachful look, 'How am I ever going to ride a horse again after that?'
It was Selene's turn to laugh, but then she grew quiet. 'That bit, at the end…did you mean to land Rhaegal?'
Jon's eyes grew cloudy, 'Yes. I don't know what I did, exactly. Beginner's luck.'
'Right,' Selene shook her head to clear it. Jon is an excellent horseman, and he's bonded to a direwolf..…that must be it. He has a gift with animals. Still, something gnawed at her. It took me months of feeding Rhaegal to get him to trust me, and weeks of practice before I got comfortable flying..
Jon noticed her solemnity, 'Are you jealous because I'm better than you?'
'You are not!'
He laughed at her outburst, and she began to giggle. He took her gloved hand, 'Come on, this is why I landed..expertly, I might add.'
Selene rolled her eyes as she followed him around a bend, where a giant waterfall awaited them. Icicles glistened in the silver light of a winter's day, and Selene was in absolute awe.
'It's beautiful.'
'Do you recognize it?'
She frowned, 'No. Should I?'
'It's our cave.'
Selene gaped at him, 'It can't be.'
Jon grinned, 'The very same.'
They were quiet for a moment, staring at the gushing waterfall. Selene tried to remember what was right behind it, a small cavern with several pools, where she and Jon once dreamed of another life.
'It came much sooner than I expected.'
Selene's mind felt numb, but now she was truly confused. 'What did?'
'Another life.' His eyes bored into her, and she was back to that night in the cave. When they were laying side-by-side on their backs, their fingers lightly intertwined. She remembered laughing, though she couldn't remember why. 'I'm a far cry away from a bar maid.'
Jon laughed, 'And this is not exactly Dorne.'
Selene laughed with him. We were just children back then, but now we are a man and woman grown. We had no idea what hells we were going to have to endure.
'I wish we could go back there,' Selene said softly. Jon didn't move, understanding that she didn't mean the cave. I mean back to that day. Before our lives were ripped from under us. Before we loved and buried others.
That made her step back.
Just one day more, Selene prayed, just one day more of pretending that there are no ghosts. That there is no war. That we are what we have never been – free. We will have to face the truth soon enough, but gods, let it not be today.
Jon was watching her closely. 'I…I'm so happy to see you again, Selene.'
The moonstone felt hot around her neck, 'I'm happy, too.' She looked away, 'When I saw you die-' she felt like someone had their hand around her throat. Jon stepped forward, embracing her. '…it broke my heart.'
He squeezed her tighter as she continued, 'I lost everything. Over and over and over again. I had nothing. But as long as you were out there, somewhere…I had hope.'
'I've seen you so many times,' Jon whispered, his words warm in her ear, 'Not just through the stones. You've come to me so often. When I dreamed sometimes. When I lay in fever. When I was afraid and so lonely and thought I would die. When I needed you, I would always see you, smiling, with your hair curling around your face. But you never spoke.'
'Did you enjoy that while you could?'
Jon chuckled, 'Never. I would have given anything to hear your voice.'
She pulled her head back, looking up at him, 'Jon…' she whispered, not finishing her sentence. She didn't have to. Jon, we need to talk about them.
'I know,' he said, sadly. I know. We have to. But gods, not today. Please not today. We've spent so many years apart, I just want to enjoy today.
Selene nodded, pulling away, 'We should return to your realm. Your people await you.'
Jon snorted, 'Selene…' he said testily.
'You just said you would have given anything to hear my voice. Well, I hope you're ready for what you wished for.'
Jon grinned, 'I am. I definitely am.'
###
Jon lifted the note above his head in the hall, 'This message was sent to me by Samwell Tarly. He was my brother at the Night's Watch. A man I trust as much as anyone in this world. He's discovered proof that Dragonstone sits on a mountain of dragonglass.'
The men murmured to each other as Selene stood, holding the scroll she received from the terrified maester after she and Jon returned to Winterfell. 'I have received this from Dragonstone. It was sent to me by my uncle Tyrion Lannister and my queen, Daenerys Targaryen. She has landed in Westeros, and plans on taking the Iron Throne from my mother. She has a powerful army at her back and three dragons.' She looked around the room, 'They have invited the leader of the north to Dragonstone.'
Jon straightened, holding his sister's gaze, 'I am going to accept.'
Sansa's mouth fell slightly ajar as the great hall erupted in protests.
'We need this dragonglass, my lords,' Jon argued. 'We know dragonglass can defeat White Walkers and their armies. We need to mine it and turn it into weapons, but more importantly, we need allies. We all saw how one dragon can turn the tide of war. We don't have the numbers to defeat the Night King on our own. I need to try and persuade her to fight with us.' Jon turned, 'Ser Davos, Lady Selene, and I will ride for White Harbor immediately, then sail to Dragonstone.'
'Have you forgotten what happened to our grandfather?' Sansa challenged, 'The Mad King invited him to King's Landing and roasted him alive.'
'Daenerys is not her father,' Selene said firmly.
Sansa continued, 'She is here to reclaim the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms. The north is one of those kingdoms. This isn't an invitation, it's a trap.'
'My lords and ladies,' Selene addressed the room, 'I give you my word that your king will return to you, unharmed. I swear it.'
Maege Mormont stood, 'My lady, with respect I must agree with Lady Sansa. I remember the Mad King all too well. A Tarygaryen cannot be trusted. I have no doubt that you will do everything in your power to keep your word, but even you won't be able to protect our king if the dragon queen decides to execute him.'
Galbart Glover stood, looking at Jon, 'We called your brother king, and then he rode south and lost his kingdom.'
Lyanna Mormont stood on a bench, 'Winter is here, Your Grace. We need the King in the North in the north.'
Lyanna's words seemed to pierce Jon the most. He turned to the room, 'You all crowned me your king. I never wanted it. I never asked for it. But I accepted it because the north is my home. It's part of me and I will never stop fighting for it. No matter the odds, but the odds are against us. None of you have seen the army of the dead, none of you. We can never hope to defeat them alone. We need allies. Powerful allies. I know it's a risk, but I have to take it.'
Sansa stood, 'Then send an emissary, don't go yourself.'
'Daenerys is a queen. Only a king can convince her to help us.'
Sansa's frustration was plain as day on her face. She glanced at her mother, who sat quietly by her side, but Catelyn only looked to Sansa. 'You're abandoning your people. You're abandoning your home.'
'I'm leaving both in good hands.'
'Whose?'
'Yours.'
Sansa straightened. Catelyn leaned forward in her chair.
'You're my sister. You're the only Stark in Winterfell. Until I return, the north is yours.'
Sansa glanced at Littlefinger, before looking back to Jon. Selene could see a swirl of emotions. Shock, pride, delight, fear…and something else. Ambition.
Jon gave his sister a nod, before taking his leave. The room began to disperse, but Selene went up to Sansa and Catelyn. 'I'll protect him,' she promised Sansa. She suddenly remembered promising Robb that she would protect Ned and felt a wave of shame. This is different, though. I was just a girl back then. I'm a dragonrider now, an heir to a Targaryen queen…I'll be damned before I let anything happen to Jon.
Sansa nodded, 'I know you will.'
Catelyn looked toward the door where Jon had left, 'I pray for his safe return.'
Selene forced herself not to gape. Ever since Jon tore the legitimization decree, Catelyn had acted almost kind to him. Even though the lords had named him king, Jon recognized Sansa as the Lady of Winterfell, and now has proved how much he trusts her by giving her command while he's away. She feels guilt for the way she's treated him. Good.
Selene embraced them both. 'Until we meet again, my ladies.'
'The gods keep you, Selene.' Catelyn said fondly.
'Be careful,' Sansa warned.
Selene smiled at them both, before turning for the courtyard.
The men were readying the horses. She approached one of the horse masters, 'No need to prepare one for me. I'll be flying.'
The man frowned, 'I was told you would be riding.'
'Not by me,' Selene looked up, wondering if Rhaegal was in the godswood.
Jon came huffing out of the crypts.
'Jon?' Selene frowned, walking up to him. He was shaking with rage. 'Who-'
'Littlefinger.'
Selene put a gentle hand on his shoulder, 'He has a divine gift for rattling people's cages, but I wouldn't worry about him,' Selene glanced at the ramparts, where Sansa and Catelyn stood to bid them farewell. 'Sansa can take care of herself.'
Jon mounted his horse, 'Are you ready?'
'I'll be meeting you at White Harbor.'
Jon tensed, 'Why?'
Rhaegal roared, landing just in front of Winterfell's main gates. The wind blew a few stray curls from her face, and Selene had never felt more calm, or more sure, of anything in her life, 'There are vows I need to keep.'
Jon's face filled with doubt, 'Selene, are you sure-'
Selene gave him a blank look. He drew back in surprise at the shift in her. 'Until White Harbor,' she told him, before walking through the gates of Winterfell. She vaulted on Rhaegal's back, gripped his spinal plates resolutely, and Rhaegal took off. Winterfell fell away below her, and Selene had only one thing on her mind.
Justice.
